Diversity Meeting with President Ohle

Thursday, December 11th, 2008

Recently, a meeting was held with President Ohle regarding issues of diversity (or sometimes the lack of it) at Gustavus.  This was a collaborative effort between myself and several students who have been heavily involved with Gustavus’ development of diversity.

The topics we discussed were those which have been in the works for months, and sometimes years.  Among these was the inclusion of more multiculturalism in the Gustavus curriculum.  This would primarily serve as a means to require students who would not normally participate in diversity-related discussions to do so.  Response: it is hard to change the way professors create their curriculum, but discussions will be held, and we need to keep pushing for it.

Another topic of conversation was the neutral faith space, which, as many of you know, is a room (which may or may not be in the new academic building) that would allow students of multiple faiths to set up their own worship area.  This would be a largely unfurnished room for the periodic setting up and taking down of worship materials: incense, candles, and any other important items for worship.  Response: the plan is in the works, but we need to keep pushing for it.

We also discussed Reconciling in Christ, the church-related program that states a church’s openness to the GLBT community.  Last year, efforts to push for the program were not entirely successful.  Response: we need to find a program that applies much more to the college than the church, and we need to push for this.

One of the most important discussions was of the inclusion of diversity/cultural competency training in new student orientation.  The purpose of this training would be to help students to cross the barrier from their perspective to others’ perspectives.  This does not mean students would have to agree with views of students of other faiths, sexual orientations, cultures, and belief systems.  They would be taught how to accept their fellow classmates’ backgrounds as legitimate alternatives to their own lifestyle.  Response: there would have to be discussions with deans and department heads, we would need someone to take on this responsibility, and we need to keep pushing for it.

Finally, we discussed the prospect of accepting more international students to Gustavus.  We brought up the ideas that more accommodations would need to me made, efforts would need to continue as they are, and the other topics discussed would help with that.  Response: he agreed, the admissions office is hard at work, but we need to keep pushing for these things.

If you notice a common theme, it is that we need to keep pushing for all these things.  As a student who is already involved in these efforts, I will continue to do so.  However, we need the support and opinions of more and more Gustavus students.  Important changes in such a firmly rooted college are not easy.  They take a large amount of effort and a lot of discussion.

If you are not currently involved in the development of diversity and would like to be, please email me or talk to a fellow student who is involved in fighting for such a cause…

 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Dec 10, 2008

Student Senate finished off the semester with the enactment of the newly approved constitution.  In doing so, senators signed a special copy of the document, which is to be enshrined in Senate’s glass case in the Student Center.  Senate cabinet members and committee chairs thanked senators for all the hard work they’ve done this semester.

With the terms of cabinet members and appointed senators ending, many positions in Senate were open for appointment.  The follow appointments were made on Monday night:

Matt Olson, Finance Chair

Ben Lundquist, Public Relations Chair

Chad Allen, Diversity Development Chair

Lucas Neher, Housing and Health Chair

Ally Pelton, Administrative Director

Derek Holm, Technologies Director

Alison Utke, Controller

Andrew Evenson, Ombudsperson

Nick Harper, Senate Speaker

Scott Broady, Parliamentarian

Luke Paquin, College View Representative

Ethan Marxhausen, ILS-Representative

The next full meeting of Senate will be in January.  At this meeting, Senate plans to appoint an Academic and Student Affairs Chair.  Also on the agenda is Day at the Capitol.  Day at the Capitol is an opportunity for college students to meet with legislators in St. Paul and express their support for financial aid programs.  Senate hopes to form an ad-hoc committee charged with promoting the event, which will take place this spring.

Student Senate Kicks Off New Academic Year With Marathon Finance Meeting

Tuesday, September 30th, 2008

New Senators and Co-Presidents were seated last night as Student Senate kicked off the academic year with a six hour meeting devoted almost exclusively to budgeting of student organizations.

The meeting began under the direction of Co-Presidents Kim Braun and Lucas Neher who soon passed the gavel on to incoming Co-Presidents Luke Garrison and Shawn Grygo. Due to miscalculations last spring, student organization budgeting was not carried out and therefore was at the top of the agenda for the first meeting. With 71 organizations submitting budgets, each of which requires approval of the full Senate, the task proved to be too large for one evening. At 1:05 a.m. the Senate adjourned after having approved 40 of the 71 budgets. A special session will be held next Monday, October 6 at 7 p.m. in the Boardroom to finish approving the remaining organization budgets.

In addition to budgeting, the Senate appointed new officers and committee chairs:
Andrew Nelson, Vice President of Administration
Ashley Melville, Vice President of Finance
Nick Stramp, Director of Communications
Alison Utke, Controller
Scott Broady, Parliamentarian
Anne Raetz, Academic Affairs Chair
Jake Partridge, Diversity Chair
Emily Thayer, Student Affairs Chair
Laura Danielson, Public Relations Chair
Lucas Neher, Food & Health Chair
Ryan Dobbs, Residential Life Chair

The following positions are now vacant and will be available for appointment at the next regular Senate meeting: Southwest Representative (1), Off Campus Representative (1), College View Representative (1), and Class of 2010 Representative (1).  Any interested students should email Vice President for Administration Andrew Nelson (anelso10@gustavus.edu) prior to the next meeting.

The next regular Senate meeting will be Monday, October 13 at 7 p.m. in the Boardroom of the Jackson Campus Center. Community comment is welcome at the beginning of every meeting.

Announcing: Ruckus

Tuesday, April 29th, 2008

Ruckus ShieldHere is a great alternative to downloading your music from file-sharing programs such as KaZaa and LimeWire. In light of recent fines issued to several students from the RIAA relating to downloads from programs like these it was made clear that an alternative method getting music would be great for the Gustavus community. Ruckus is one such program that is available to all college students. Visit Ruckus.com today, download the player, and set up an account (use email@gustavus.edu, not email@gac.edu to register) to start downloading music, the only catch is you can’t put the music on your Apple products (sorry Mac people, and iPod fans). Other mp3 players that aren’t iTunes based may support the songs you download for Ruckus however. Questions? Visit Ruckus.com or e-mail us at webmaster@gacspot.com
